  • Park on the footpath

As long as you have a parking ticket or a residents permit feel free to park with your front wheels on the footpath.

When I first saw a car parked like this I thought the driver had one too many but instead of widening the roadway to add extra parking, they’ve kept the wide footpaths but for certain times of the day allow you to park with the back wheels in the gutter and the front wheels on the footpath.

  • Kollwitzstrasse markets

Saturday morning markets on the cobblestones of Kollwitzstrasse. I was tempted by the currywurst and several other German delicacies, but did avoid the beer-from-the-keg – it was early after all. But perhaps nect week.

  • Looking down Rykestrasse to Wasserturm

One of the most noticeable thing about Prenzlauer is the children. On the way from the airport the taxi driver said the berg had the highest proportion of children in Germany.

After a couple of days I can believe this. We’ve seen at least a dozen kindergartens, including one on the ground floor of the apartment, and the suburb swarms with children clothes and toy shops..

  • Ampelmännchen

Ampelmännchen or little traffic light man is the East German version of the walk/don’t walk sign. Its been adopted more widely throughout Germany and it’s cultural history is worth a read.

  • Building art

Walking down Prenzlauer Alle I happened to look over my shoulder and saw this amazing bit of art above a roofline on the side of a building.

In the background in Fernsehturm Berlin, the TV tower..

  • Statue of Kathe Kollwitz

One of the reasons for coming to Berlin was to look at the art and culture.

One of my daughters favourites is Kathe Kollwitz, and the park just in the next block is named after her and contains this statue.

  • Street art

One of the things I was looking forward to in coming to Berlin was the thriving street art scene.

While some is little more than graffiti and tagging, some like this in the courtyard of a building on Kollwitzstrasse is strong and powerful..

  • Front doorbells – Sredzkistrasse 35

Like a lot of the buildings in this part of Berlin, there are no numbers on either the apartments, or the door bells, just a space for the name of the apartments occupants. (and no … I haven’t met David Bowie yet )

  • Flensburger Dunkel is as the name says, a dark beer, but despite it’s clarity, one that had a decent body to it. The third of a litre bottles with the ceramic tops go for about 0.79 euros at my local supermarket, so about $1.20 Australian
