  • White Asparagus

White asparagus is a seasonal crop, and according to the locals one of the few vegetables that is only found in the shops in April and May. Many restaurants and families have their own recipes for it’s preparation but mostly I’ve found it with a cream sauce.

  • Breakfast beer

Being a beer drinker I’m enjoying German beer, but what interests me more is the culture around drinking beer. This is a Saturday morning market in Kolliwitzstrasse, and this is a breakfast beer as he waits for his sausages to be cooked. The beer is served by the stall cooking sausages

It is also quite common to see people just walking around with a bottle or glass of beer

  • Street art, Oderbergerstrasse

Street art, Oderbergerstrasse.I notice that while most attention is given to the large street art pieces, smaller works have their place.

  • U2 from Eberswalderstrasse

    U2 from Eberswalderstrasse

The U2 from Eberswalderstrasse disappears underground not long after leaving the station on its way to Alexanderplatz, Potsdamerplatz and other stations. Its a train we have used a lot already as it heads through the centre of the city and beyond.

  • Old buildings, Prenzlauerberg

    Old buildings, Prenzlauer

Many of the buildings in Prenzlauer are in fairly poor condition. The benefit for travelers is that the inner courtyards are often accessible to photographers. Despite it’s appearance this building is occupied, although not necessarily by people paying rent

  • Looking down Rykestrasse to Wasserturm

One of the most noticeable thing about Prenzlauer is the children. On the way from the airport the taxi driver said the berg had the highest proportion of children in Germany.

After a couple of days I can believe this. We’ve seen at least a dozen kindergartens, including one on the ground floor of the apartment, and the suburb swarms with children clothes and toy shops..

  • Building art

Walking down Prenzlauer Alle I happened to look over my shoulder and saw this amazing bit of art above a roofline on the side of a building.

In the background in Fernsehturm Berlin, the TV tower..

  • Statue of Kathe Kollwitz

One of the reasons for coming to Berlin was to look at the art and culture.

One of my daughters favourites is Kathe Kollwitz, and the park just in the next block is named after her and contains this statue.

  • Street art

One of the things I was looking forward to in coming to Berlin was the thriving street art scene.

While some is little more than graffiti and tagging, some like this in the courtyard of a building on Kollwitzstrasse is strong and powerful..

  • Front doorbells – Sredzkistrasse 35

Like a lot of the buildings in this part of Berlin, there are no numbers on either the apartments, or the door bells, just a space for the name of the apartments occupants. (and no … I haven’t met David Bowie yet )
