  • Ampelmännchen

Ampelmännchen or little traffic light man is the East German version of the walk/don’t walk sign. Its been adopted more widely throughout Germany and it’s cultural history is worth a read.

  • Building art

Walking down Prenzlauer Alle I happened to look over my shoulder and saw this amazing bit of art above a roofline on the side of a building.

In the background in Fernsehturm Berlin, the TV tower..

  • Statue of Kathe Kollwitz

One of the reasons for coming to Berlin was to look at the art and culture.

One of my daughters favourites is Kathe Kollwitz, and the park just in the next block is named after her and contains this statue.

  • Street art

One of the things I was looking forward to in coming to Berlin was the thriving street art scene.

While some is little more than graffiti and tagging, some like this in the courtyard of a building on Kollwitzstrasse is strong and powerful..

  • Front doorbells – Sredzkistrasse 35

Like a lot of the buildings in this part of Berlin, there are no numbers on either the apartments, or the door bells, just a space for the name of the apartments occupants. (and no … I haven’t met David Bowie yet )

  • Flensburger Dunkel is as the name says, a dark beer, but despite it’s clarity, one that had a decent body to it. The third of a litre bottles with the ceramic tops go for about 0.79 euros at my local supermarket, so about $1.20 Australian

  • Danziger strasse
Parking with your rear wheels in the gutter and your nose on the footpath appears to be legal,at least “with parking ticket or resident parking permit”

  • Outside bar
Not all the street art you see is non-commercial nor salubrious

  • mural
This mural wraps around the corner over the ground floor of a bulding – Sredzkistrasse and Hagenauerstrasse
